Gorilla Mobile Ready to Shake Up Singapore’s Crowded MVNO Market
Blog | Company | Mobile Brands
We’d like to congratulate our friends over at Gorilla Mobile on a successful soft launch. They’ve got a big challenge ahead of them — the Singapore Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) market is ultra-competitive. But, then again, they’re not your average, ordinary, everyday mobile service offering.
Gorilla Mobile Brings Blockchain to Mobile Services
You read that correctly. A key differentiator for Gorilla Mobile is their blockchain-based “SwitchBack” feature, which enables subscribers to fully utilize their unused mobile data by exchanging them for “Go Tokens.”
These tokens, which have no expiration date, can be redeemed and used to offset future bills or pay for additional mobile services. They can also be shared, transferred, or traded with friends, family, or co-workers — even if they subscribe to different telcos.
Speaking at a media briefing to promote the company’s June 18th launch, founder and CEO Xanne Leo stated that “Telcos assume that everybody wants and needs more data. However, we found that this is not true.”
Gorilla Mobile is looking to establish a fairer way to consume mobile services, where subscribers pay only for what they use.
An Eye to the Future
Gorilla Mobile was launched in 2019 with approximately 3 million U.S. dollars in seed capital. Today, they have 18 employees working across Singapore and Thailand.
Looking ahead, Gorilla Mobile is planning a Series A round of funding, with the goal of raising 5 million U.S. dollars. These funds will be used for expanding into new markets and the introduction of new services.
Indeed, once the region’s COVID-19 travel restrictions are lifted, the company plans on setting up shop in Malaysia and Thailand, with an ETA of approximately 18 months.
Moreover, they will be adding travel roaming data, international direct dialing (IDD), and digital office telephony services in Q4 of 2021. These features will enable their subscribers to transfer calls overseas or purchase overseas numbers through their app.
To facilitate their mobile services, Gorilla Mobile leverages M1 Singapore’s network infrastructure, as well as the Pareteum Experience Cloud.
